Getting started

What is a battery passport?

The digital record the EU requires for EV, LMT and large industrial batteries from 18 February 2027.

A battery passport is a digital record for one individual battery. It is reached through a QR code on the battery and holds information about what the battery is, where it comes from, how it performs and how it must be handled at the end of its life.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 makes a passport mandatory from 18 February 2027 for electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport (LMT) batteries such as e-bike and e-scooter packs, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.

Three levels of access

  • Public: model, manufacturer, ratings, materials, collection and safety information. Anyone who scans the QR code sees this.
  • Level 2: data for repairers, second-life operators and recyclers, such as detailed ratings and repair information.
  • Level 3: detailed composition and dismantling data for authorities and notified bodies.

Who is responsible?

The economic operator that places the battery on the EU market, usually the manufacturer or importer, is responsible for the passport and its data. Serial Passport is the provider: we issue the passport numbers, host the records and keep them available.
